Located in the Virunga National Park (Known for mountain gorilla trekking in Congo), just near the Congo and Rwanda border, Nyiragongo volcano is incredibly one of the world’s most powerful/active volcanoes. Mount Nyiragongo has had a series of eruptions with the most recent one recorded in May 2021. This stratovolcano is part of the 8 Virunga Massifs/Volcanoes lying within the Virunga Conservation Area. Nyiragongo Mountain formed due to an eruption many years ago. The volcano has had over 35 eruptions since 1882 and the most recent of all was recorded in May 2021. Its Lava is made of Melilite Nephelinite. Unlike other volcanic eruptions, during volcanic activity at Nyiragongo Volcano the lava flow is slightly faster the fact that the volcano contains low silica content.

Hiking Nyiragongo Volcano is possible all year-round. However, the dry season offers the most favorable conditions for hiking through Nyiragongo Mountain. The 2 dry seasons often occur in Virunga National Park Congo that is from June to August and December to February.
Getting to Mt. Nyiragongo
By road, Nyiragongo volcano in Congo is reachable using a 4×4 rental car- drive from Kigali crossing over the border to Goma in D.R. Congo. Goma town to Mount Nyiragongo is 9 miles. By air, you can take a flight up to Goma airport and drive up to Virunga NP where Nyiragongo is found.
